In the late 1950s, an individual fighter began a pointed attack on the American high culture. Long before "Bad Painting" became a central concern of contemporary art, Peter Saul deliberately violated the good taste. In his distinctive language, the painter has developed a cross-over of pop art, surrealism, abstract expressionism, San Francisco radio and cartoon culture by picking up political and social issues. With the pop art, he shares the interest in the banal, the consumer society and the cheerful picture worlds of comics in bright, appealing colors.
Last but not least, his work is also linked to the aesthetic strategies of counterculture in California. An almost angry painting is shown when Saul discusses the shadows of the American Dream. Here the simultaneity of overbearing humor and playful, yet harsh system criticism is revealed. For the first time in Europe, SCHIRN presents a comprehensive overview of the "artist's artist", which has so far received too little attention.

LIMITS \ BORDERS - architecture picture. European Architectural Photography Prize 2017
Since 1995, the European Architecture Prize has been awarded every two years, since 2003 by architekturbild e.v. Cooperation partner since 2008 is the DAM, in 2016 the Federal Foundation Building Culture was added. In 2017 the prize goes to the Berlin photographer Andreas Gehrke. His picture series "Arrival" documents provisional refugee housing in Berlin. By switching between black-and-white and color photographs, he refers to situations of the past or the present. By focusing on different refugee environments, the viewer is given a comprehensive impression of the extent of the alienation and the psychological impact of borders on human beings. In addition to creativity in dealing with the issue of "borders", the jury, chaired by Celina Lunsford, assessed the photographic quality and the architectural approach of the submitted paintings.

堂 堂 meet asian art
There is much evidence that Asia will play a central role in world affairs in the 21st century. Also in Frankfurt am Main, a steadily growing presence in Asia has been unmistakable in recent years.
Against this background, but also because of the outstanding role played by the collections of Asian art in the Museum of Applied Art for over a hundred years, the Museum of Asian Art is dedicated to 堂 堂 meet asian art as of October 2016, a new place of exchange, discovery , Understanding and discussion. Here, changing exhibits from the unique collections of Asian art of the museum are housed in the form of small cabinet exhibitions. At the same time 歐 堂 堂 meet asian art is more than an exhibition space: As a forum for events and presentations, it offers new insights into Asia's contribution to the art of the world.
Since the establishment of the Kunstgewerbeverein in 1877, East Asia and the Islamic world have been a visible contrast to the applied art of Europe and the West in the collection strategy of the Museum of Applied Arts - then still under the name of the Kunstgewerbemuseum.
