Between 1950 and 1980 the playground was a creative laboratory. In the cities of the industrial nations, new-fashioned, crazy and exciting ventures emerged: Landscape architects, artists, activists and citizens wanted to offer children the most useful playground to choose from and at the same time rethink community and city. Drawing on the pioneers of new playground concepts in the first half of the 20th century, The Playground Project brings the richness of that era to life - through photos, packages, plans, books and masses of feature films, but also through play sculptures that crawl, slide and hide. Everyone, whether children, parents, playroom planners, educators, architects or students, is welcome to discover the playground of yesterday and to imagine the playground of tomorrow. The Playground Project was curated by Gabriela Burkhalter for the Kunsthalle Zürich and updated and expanded for the Deutsches Architekturmuseum.
